A good estate agent will give you the best advice on this, but our experience of hundreds of projects is that the cost of a conversion can be very close indeed to the extra value it adds – sometimes much less if, for example, you are changing a three bedroom house to a genuine four bedroom home.What is for sure is that you will come unstuck unless the work is completed to the highest possible standard.
Initial Installation
It really can cost only a few thousand pounds to install some simple roof lights and an electricity supply for, say, a home office. And the impact on your lifestyle could be massive – but there is of course a lot else you can do.
If you go one step further and install a dormer extension normally at the rear of the property, you will have a great area to use as the rear roof will be removed maximising the space and standing room available. This conversion can be fitted with large French doors.
Likewise with a mansard conversion, normally approved by the local authority planners. The rear is sloped with a 70 degree angle giving a very attractive exterior finish, the side party walls being raised up in brick.
